ASM 16 Mar , 2026

This is a guest blog authored by Nyasha Magwaro, a Mining Engineering student at the Zimbabwe School of Mines. Nyasha is one of the ten (10) winners of the 2026 community voices video competition hosted by The Impact Facility, in partnership with Mining Indaba that invited community members, representatives of indigenous peoples in mining areas, civil society organisations, activists and visionaries to reflect on the MI26 theme, “Stronger Together: Progress Through Partnership,” and how it relates to their lived experiences.

Nyasha attended Mining Indaba 2026 in Cape Town from 9 – 12 February in Cape Town, South Africa, and this blog summarises their experience at the conference.  More information about the competition is available here.

A Dream Come True

Attending the Investing in Mining Indaba 2026 Conference in Cape Town was a defining moment in my journey as a young mining professional. As a student at the Zimbabwe School of Mines, I was present at one of the world’s most influential mining gatherings, allowing me to witness firsthand how conversations, partnerships, and decisions are shaping the future of mining in Africa.

Experiencing the Global Mining Conversation

The Mining Indaba brings together a powerful network of stakeholders, government ministers, policymakers, investors, mining executives, and innovators from across the world. The event provided valuable insight into the future of mining, particularly around responsible resource management, sustainability, investment, and technological advancement.

As a young, aspiring Mining Engineer, engaging with individuals who are actively shaping the industry’s future across the mining value chain, was both motivating and educational. These engagements allowed me to learn from their experiences, exchange ideas, and gain valuable perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the mining sector today.

It was inspiring to witness national leaders and industry pioneers share strategies on how Africa can maximize the value of its mineral wealth while ensuring that mining contributes meaningfully to economic development and community growth.

A Personal Professional Turning Point

Attending the eventreinforced my belief that young professionals have an important role to play in the future of the mining industry. As Zimbabwe continues to position mining as a key driver of economic growth, it is essential that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge, networks, and global exposure needed to drive responsible and innovative mining practices. Experiences like these are critical in preparing young professionals to contribute meaningfully to the sector.

I sincerely appreciate Women in Mining Zimbabwe, for whom I am a member, for their dedication to empowering the next generation and ensuring that young voices are included in shaping the future of mining in Zimbabwe and across Africa.

I am deeply grateful to The Impact Facility for making it possible for emerging professionals like myself to participate in such an important global platform. Their continued commitment to empowering young people and promoting inclusivity in the mining sector is helping shape the next generation of industry leaders.
